Wooden Toddler Beds (140x70)

Wooden Toddler Bed 70×140 cm – low floor bed with safety rails

The move from a cot to the first real bed is a milestone. Not because the furniture changes — but because the child's relationship with their own sleep changes. A low wooden toddler bed gives a child the thing a cot never could: the ability to get in and out independently, at any hour, without calling for help.

Our toddler beds for 70×140 cm mattresses are made from solid pine, fitted with safety rails, and designed to sit close to the floor. Both models fit standard mattresses from IKEA, JYSK, and most UK suppliers. No special sizes. Wooden slats included. Free delivery.

Why a low floor bed — and why it matters for this stage

A standard toddler bed sits at adult-furniture height. A child cannot get in or out without help — which means every morning and every night-time waking involves a parent. A low floor bed changes that dynamic entirely.

Independent sleep cycle: A child who can get in and out of bed alone develops a healthier relationship with sleep. They go back to bed themselves after waking. They do not shout for help at 5 am because they cannot climb down.
Safe transition from the cot: The sleeping surface sits just 23 cm from the floor — about the height of a standard doorstep. If a child does roll out despite the safety rail, the drop is minimal. Many parents place a folded blanket alongside for the first weeks.
The Montessori principle: A low floor bed is the sleep zone equivalent of a low clothes rail — the child has full ownership of the space. It is their bed, at their height, on their terms. That autonomy is the beginning of independent sleep.
Co-sleeper option: The Baltic Pine Forest model sits low enough to work alongside a standard adult bed — a gentle halfway point between shared sleep and the child's own room.

Why 70×140 cm — and not a standard single straight away

Many parents assume they should skip the toddler bed and go straight to a full single (90×200 cm). In most cases, this is the more expensive and less practical choice.

Nest security: A smaller bed feels protective and cosy to a child who has just left the cot. A 90×200 cm single can feel vast and unsettling to a toddler — the 70×140 cm size creates a natural sense of enclosure that supports settled sleep.
Mattress economy: This is the most overlooked practical argument. A 70×140 cm mattress costs £40–80. A 90×200 cm single costs £100–200+. During the early years, mattresses sometimes need replacing — accidents happen, children grow fast, and preferences change. Replacing a toddler mattress once or twice costs far less than replacing a full single. The saving over 3–4 years is real.
Space for active play: In a typical UK children's bedroom — particularly in terraced and semi-detached houses — a 90×200 cm single dominates the room. A 70×140 cm bed leaves meaningful floor space for climbing frames, balance boards, and the independent play that matters at this age. The bed serves its function without taking over.

Baltic Pine Forest — natural pine, Montessori low floor bed

Untreated solid pine — the grain visible, the surface warm, no chemicals on the wood a child sleeps against. Frame sits 15 cm from the floor — enough space to slide a toy storage box underneath. With a standard 8 cm mattress, the sleeping surface sits at 23 cm — easy for small legs to climb in independently. Safety rails are permanently mounted on both sides — fixed in place from assembly for consistent, reliable protection. Works as a standalone low toddler bed or alongside the parents' bed as a co-sleeper. Pre-assembled headboards — straightforward self-assembly with photo instructions.

Provence — grey painted pine, classic country style

Solid pine in a soft grey finish — painted with water-based, non-toxic paint. The classic cottage-style headboard and footboard give the room a timeless look that works equally well for girls and boys. Sleeping surface sits at 23 cm from the floor with a standard mattress — easy for small legs to climb in independently.

The safety rails are fully removable and repositionable — with scratch-protected edges so they never mark the bed frame. Use one or two rails on the same side, slide one in while the child is sleeping and remove it during the day so the floor space beside the bed is free for play, or remove both entirely as confidence grows. The rails store flat under the bed when not in use.

The cot-to-bed transition — what to expect

Most children are ready between 18 months and 2.5 years — when they begin climbing out of the cot, or when they start showing interest in independence. There is no strict age. The low floor bed makes the transition gentler because it removes the barrier of height: the child can manage the move themselves.

First nights: Many children take a few nights to adjust. A folded blanket or rug alongside the bed, a familiar sleep toy, and keeping the bedtime routine exactly the same are the most effective tools.
Early waking: Children in a low floor bed often go back to sleep more easily — they can manage the transition themselves without needing to call for a parent to lift them back in.
The safety rail: On the Baltic Pine Forest, rails are permanently fixed — no decisions needed, maximum consistency. On the Provence, rails slide in and out: keep them in at night, remove during the day so the floor space beside the bed is free for play. As confidence grows, leave them off entirely.

Frequently asked questions about wooden toddler beds

When is a child ready to move from a cot to a toddler bed?

Most children are ready between 18 months and 2.5 years — typically when they start climbing out of the cot, or when they begin showing interest in more independence. A low floor bed makes the transition easier: the child can get in and out alone, which reduces night-time waking and builds confidence. There is no strict age — follow your child's cues.

What size mattress fits a 70×140 cm toddler bed?

A standard 70×140 cm mattress — available from IKEA, JYSK, John Lewis, and most UK nursery furniture suppliers. No special sizes needed. Wooden slats are included with both models.

What is the difference between the Baltic Pine Forest and the Provence?

Baltic Pine Forest — natural untreated pine, Montessori approach, 15 cm frame to floor height (toy storage underneath, for example), permanently fixed safety rails on both sides, works as co-sleeper. Provence — grey painted pine, classic country style, removable and repositionable safety rails with scratch-protected edges (slide in at night, remove during the day, store flat under the bed). Both sleeping surfaces sit at 23 cm with a standard mattress. Both fit a 70×140 cm mattress and both are solid pine made in Europe.

Is a low toddler bed safe — will my child roll out?

Both models include protective safety rails. The sleeping surface sits at 23 cm from the floor with a standard mattress. On the Baltic Pine Forest, rails are permanently fixed on both sides — consistent protection from day one. On the Provence, rails are removable & anti-scratch repositionable — slide them in at bedtime and remove during the day so the space beside the bed is free for play, or store them flat under the bed when not needed. Many parents also place a folded blanket or rug alongside during the first weeks of transition.

Can the toddler bed be used as a co-sleeper?

Yes — both models support the transition for children who need reassurance at night, but in different ways. The Provence works as a true co-sleeper: push it flush against the parents' bed and move both protective safety rails to the far side — leaving the near side open and both rails covering the full outer edge. The Baltic Pine Forest, with its low 23 cm sleeping surface, works well placed close to the parents' bed in the same room — low enough that a child never feels far away, and easy to reach from the floor independently.

How long will a child use a 70×140 cm toddler bed?

From around 18 months to approximately 6 years — when the standard single (90×200 cm) becomes the natural next step. The 70×140 cm format gives enough room to grow without the bed dominating a small bedroom.

Is untreated pine safe for a child's bed?

Yes — the safest option. Lacquered furniture releases VOCs into the air, especially in the first months. A child sleeping 10–12 hours a day breathes that air continuously. Untreated pine releases nothing. Our pine undergoes kiln drying at joinery standard — no chemicals. If the surface gets a mark, it sands out locally in minutes. Furniture that does not wear out — furniture that gets passed down.
