Baby Climbing Frame
Baby Climbing Frame Indoor – wooden Montessori climbing triangle from 9 months
A baby climbing frame is a wooden indoor climbing set designed for children from 9 months to 3 years — a solid pine Montessori climbing triangle with reversible board that folds flat in 5 seconds. CE certified, made in Europe, direct from our own workshop. Everything your baby needs to climb, balance, and slide safely at home, without a playroom and without a garden.
Your baby climbs on the sofa. On the table. On everything you would rather they did not. That is not defiance — that is biology.
Babies and toddlers between 9 months and 3 years go through a critical phase in their vestibular and motor development. Climbing, pulling up, and exploring heights is a natural drive you channel — not a problem you solve with "no". Give it somewhere to go.

Playful Learning — Emmi Pikler meets Barin Toys
Inspired by the pedagogy of Emmi Pikler and the Playful Learning philosophy, these climbing sets are built around one principle: children learn best when they are free to move at their own pace.
A climbing frame in the living room is not just a toy. It is a laboratory for success — a place where your child builds the physical confidence and courage that underpins all future learning. Available every day, without travel, without appointments. When your child climbs while you are nearby, self-confidence grows faster than through any adult-led activity.
Why 6 rungs — and not 7?
This is the question most parents do not think to ask. And the answer is pedagogical, not accidental.
Our baby climbing triangle has 6 rungs per side. The larger toddler model has 7. That sounds like a small difference — but for a child of 1–2 years, it is significant. Motor confidence is not built by overcoming challenges that are too large. It is built by mastering tasks that are just the right size.
A child who cannot reach the top stops trying. A child who reaches the top on 6 rungs — and experiences that moment of "I did it myself" — will try again. And again. The height is a pedagogical decision, not a design detail.
Rung spacing is 7 cm on all models — optimised for the foot arch and hand grip at every rung. The top two rungs are spaced 11 cm apart — wide enough so the child does not get stuck, and exactly right for sitting and enjoying the view.
Solid pine — your baby feels nature
The frame is made from solid pine — hand-selected, glued in plate construction for the wide legs that give Barin Toys frames their characteristic stability. No lacquer on the climbing surfaces. No chemicals. Only the natural surface of the wood.
Untreated wood has a natural texture and warmth that plastic and lacquered surfaces cannot match. Your baby's fingers and bare feet meet the real feel of nature — a sensory experience that actively supports sensorimotor development from the very first touch.
All edges are hand-sanded to a silk-smooth finish. The boards are made from hand-selected Baltic birch plywood — each piece individually checked so the grain matches and the surface is perfect under bare hands and bare feet.
The product is fully repairable. Pencil marks or chalk from years of use sand away in minutes — and the wood looks new again. This is not a product that wears out. It is a product that gets passed down.
What is in the set?
You choose your set based on three things: character / design, finish (natural pine or painted), and type of climbing board. The set is complete — nothing needs to be purchased separately.

Barin Toys design since 2018 — what makes the difference
Why wooden — not plastic?
Most indoor climbing frames for babies are made from plastic or low-grade MDF. Here is what that means in practice:
The gift that actually gets used — for a first birthday, a second birthday, or any celebration where you want to give something that lasts.
Most toys have a shelf life of two weeks. This frame has a shelf life of years — because it grows with the child. At 9 months, something to pull up on. At 18 months, something to conquer. At 3 years, a daily ritual before breakfast. That arc of use is what makes it one of the most useful 1st birthday presents and genuinely one of the most worthwhile gifts for a 2-year-old too — the same frame, a different child.
For grandparents putting together a first birthday present — and for parents who want something that children actually return to every day — this is the answer. Something wooden, something European, something that meets the child where they actually are.

Frequently asked questions about baby climbing frames
Is a climbing frame safe for a 1-year-old?
Yes — when the construction is right. Our baby climbing frames are CE certified, tested to 60 kg, and use rectangular rungs with rounded edges that do not slip under small feet. The gravity-lock mechanism means the frame becomes more stable the more weight is placed on it. Rung spacing of 7 cm is optimised for the foot arch and hand grip of children from 9 months.
What age is a Pikler triangle suitable for?
From around 9 months — the moment a baby begins pulling themselves up. At this stage the frame is used to pull up and stand rather than to climb. Independent climbing typically begins between 12 and 18 months. The 6-rung model is sized for children from 9 months to around 3 years — the top is reachable, and that reachability is the whole point.
Which climbing frame is right for my child's age?
For babies from 9 months — the 6-rung model with reversible board. Reachable top, safe grip, folds in 5 seconds. For toddlers from 2.5 years — the larger 7-rung model with slide. Both are solid pine, CE certified, made in Europe.
Why 6 rungs and not more?
A pedagogical decision, not a design detail. Motor confidence is built by mastering challenges that are just the right size. A child who can reach the top independently will climb again and again. A child who cannot reach the top stops trying. The 6-rung model is sized so that a child of 1–2 years can reach the summit on their own — that single experience of "I did it myself" is the foundation of physical self-confidence.
What is included in the set?
The climbing triangle (6 rungs) and your choice of board. The Beginner's Board is reversible — smooth side for sliding, textured side with 6 rungs in a checkerboard pattern for the first climbing attempts. Everything is included — nothing requires a separate purchase.
Is the wood treated with lacquer or chemicals?
No — and it does not need to be. Our pine undergoes kiln drying at joinery standard. The high temperature acts as a complete natural sterilisation — insects, mould, and biological contaminants are eliminated without any chemical treatment. No lacquer, no oil, no chemicals on the climbing surfaces. Coloured details use water-based, non-toxic paint approved for children's toys.
My baby climbs on everything. Will this help?
Yes — and that is exactly why you need it. Babies and toddlers between 1 and 2 years go through a phase where climbing is a biological necessity. Twenty minutes on a safe, approved frame is as physically demanding as forty minutes of running — and the urge to climb on furniture gradually disappears when that need is met in the right place. You are not stopping the climbing. You are giving it somewhere to go.
Is a baby climbing frame a good gift for a 1-year-old?
One of the most genuinely useful gifts you can give a family with a toddler. Unlike most toys that get forgotten within weeks, this frame is used every single day — it meets the child developmentally and stays relevant for years. For a first birthday, a second birthday, or from grandparents who want to give something that genuinely matters — a set like this is the gift that earns its place from day one.
