Montessori climbing arch

Montessori Climbing Arch – wooden baby rocker arch from 6 months

A Montessori climbing arch is a wooden baby rocker and developmental movement tool designed for children from 6 months — before the climbing triangle, before the first steps. Solid birch plywood, CE certified, made in Europe.

Before a baby is ready to climb rungs, they roll. They reach. They push up on their arms and pull themselves towards things. They need surfaces to lean against, grip, and explore — not as preparation for something else, but as the thing itself.

The climbing arch is the earliest movement environment we make. A baby rocker arch, a crawling aid, a leaning support, and a sensory object — all in one curved piece of solid wood. Also known as a Pikler arch or Montessori baby gym — the stage before the climbing triangle. And the piece that stays relevant long after.

The arch comes before the triangle

The climbing triangle is for children who can stand and are ready to climb rungs. The climbing arch is for everything that comes before that — and it addresses needs the triangle cannot.

From 6 months — tummy time and rolling. The curved surface invites babies to roll over and under, lean across, and push up on their arms. This is vestibular stimulation — the body learning balance and spatial orientation before it can walk.
From 6–9 months — pulling up. As the baby begins to push up and reach, the arch rungs give something to grip and pull against. The curve makes the arch naturally stable — the baby can lean their full weight on it without it tipping.
From 9–12 months — first standing. The arch becomes a leaning post. The baby grips the top rungs and pulls up to standing — using the arch exactly as they will later use furniture. This is pre-walking motor development at its most natural.
Rocker function — always. From the very first months, the arch rocks gently under the baby's weight. That rocking motion is vestibular input — it builds the inner ear balance systems that underpin all later movement. The cushion turns it into a safe, cosy resting place between activity.

Two products — choose by use case

Both are wooden climbing arches from Barin Toys. The choice comes down to how you want to use it:

Moon Arch with Starry Night Cushion — rocker, swing, and nursery centrepiece

The arch as a standalone sensory and movement object. The moon shape and starry night cushion make it a nursery piece from birth. From 6 months, it becomes an active tool — rocking, leaning, gripping. The cushion gives a safe soft surface for tummy time and rest. A calm, beautiful object that earns its place in the room long before climbing begins.

Arch + First Baby Steps Board — the first complete motor development set

The arch paired with a gentle slope board. The First Baby Steps board gives babies a surface to crawl up, slide back down, and use as a ramp — the very first incline challenge. Together they create the earliest active movement environment: the arch for rocking, leaning, and pulling up; the board for crawling and sliding. The set that bridges the gap between tummy time and the climbing triangle.

What the arch does — day by day

Tummy time: The cushion across the arch gives babies a raised, supported surface for tummy time — reducing the frustration of flat-floor tummy time while still building the same neck and shoulder strength.
Rolling and exploring: The arch creates a tunnel — babies crawl through it, roll against it, reach under it. Every interaction is spatial problem-solving at the scale of an infant's world.
Pulling to standing: The rungs and the curved top give babies a perfect pulling surface — stable, grippable, and at the right height for a baby working towards their first stand.
Rocking and rest: Placed cushion-side up, the arch becomes a gentle rocker. The vestibular input of rocking — the body learning to calibrate balance — is one of the most fundamental developmental experiences in the first year.
With the board — crawling up and sliding down: The First Baby Steps board leaned against the arch creates the first slope. The baby crawls up. Slides back. Tries again. This is exactly the kind of repeatable, self-directed challenge that builds confidence and coordination.

What comes next

The arch does not become obsolete when the child starts climbing. It continues as a rocker, a Montessori slide base, and a spatial object. But as the child grows into independent standing and early walking, the climbing triangle is the natural next step.

From 9–12 months: The baby climbing frame with 6 rungs. Sized so the top is reachable — the first real climbing experience. View baby climbing frame →
From 2.5 years: The toddler climbing frame with slide and Rocks Board. The full challenge. View toddler climbing frame →

A wooden climbing arch is the earliest piece in a movement environment built to grow with a child. Whether you call it a baby rocker arch, a Montessori arch, a climbing toy for babies, or a Montessori baby gym — the purpose is the same: giving a baby a safe, natural surface to move against, lean on, and explore at their own pace. A genuine indoor activity that works on rainy days, every day, as a natural alternative to soft play. Solid wood, no chemicals, made in Europe.

Ready for the next stage? The baby climbing frame with 6 rungs — from 9 months, sized so the top is reachable.

A first birthday gift, a My First Christmas gift, or a gift from grandparents who understand what the early months actually need.

Most baby toys address entertainment. The climbing arch addresses development. It is used from the first weeks of active play through to toddlerhood — a rare climbing toy for babies that does not get outgrown quickly. One of the most meaningful gifts for a baby from 6 months, a climbing toy for a 1-year-old, a first birthday present, or a My First Christmas gift that genuinely earns its place from day one.

Frequently asked questions about the climbing arch

From what age can a baby use the climbing arch?

From around 6 months — the moment a baby begins to roll, reach, and push up. At this stage the arch is used as a rocker and a surface to lean against. From around 9–12 months, babies begin pulling themselves up using the arch rungs. The First Baby Steps board adds a gentle crawling slope from 6 months. Both products are designed for use well before the climbing triangle becomes relevant.

What is the difference between the arch and the climbing triangle?

The arch comes before the triangle — developmentally. The climbing arch is for babies from 6 months who are rolling, reaching, and beginning to pull up. The climbing triangle is for children from 9–12 months who are ready to climb rungs. The arch is the pre-climbing stage. The triangle is what comes after.

What does the arch actually do for a baby's development?

More than it looks like. The curved shape invites rolling over and under — vestibular stimulation that supports balance and spatial awareness. The rungs give babies something to grip and pull against as they work towards standing. The rocker function develops core strength through controlled movement. The cushion gives a safe surface for tummy time and rest. It is a movement environment, not a single toy.

What is the difference between the two products?

Moon Arch with cushion — the arch as a standalone rocker and sensory object. Includes a starry night cushion. Ideal from birth as a nursery piece and from 6 months as an active movement tool.

Arch + First Baby Steps Board — the complete pre-climbing set. The gentle slope board gives babies a surface to crawl up, slide down, and use as a first ramp. The earliest active motor development set we make.

Is the climbing arch safe for a baby under 12 months?

Yes — when used as intended and with supervision. The arch is made from solid birch plywood with no sharp edges, no lacquer on contact surfaces, and water-based non-toxic paint. CE certified. Always supervise play with babies under 12 months.

Can the arch be used with the Pikler triangle later?

Yes. The arch and the First Baby Steps board both work alongside the climbing triangle as the child grows. The arch continues as a rocker and a Montessori slide base. The First Baby Steps board sits at the base of the triangle as a gentle entry ramp. The set grows — nothing becomes obsolete.

Is this a good first birthday or Christmas gift for a baby?

One of the best for babies between 6 and 18 months. Unlike most baby toys that are outgrown within weeks, the arch is used from early infancy through to the toddler years. For a first birthday, a My First Christmas, or as a gift from grandparents who want something that genuinely develops — the climbing arch is the gift that earns its place from the first day and keeps it.
