Toddler Tower

Toddler Tower – wooden learning tower and kitchen helper for children from 1 year

Your child wants to wash their hands. They want to see what you are doing. They want to stir the batter, pour the milk, sprinkle the salt. That is not a problem you solve with "no" or "wait" — it is a natural drive to participate, and a toddler tower is what makes it possible safely.

A wooden learning tower is not a toy. It is kitchen furniture. It brings your child up to eye level with the worktop — for washing hands, cooking, baking, and shared moments — and makes it possible to involve them in the daily routine without lifting them up and setting them down many times a day. An investment in your child's independence in the kitchen and in your back. A real toddler kitchen helper — the piece of furniture that earns its place from the very first day.

At Barin Toys we make two models: Stripe — the fixed model with maximum stability for the youngest, from 12 months — and Slim — the foldable learning tower that folds to 12 cm wide and fits in any kitchen. Both in solid wood. Both CE certified. Both directly from our own workshop. A genuine Montessori toddler tower for everyday use.

When do you need a toddler tower — and when is it too early?

A toddler tower is relevant from the moment a child can stand steadily with support — typically from around 12 months. But the need is clearest between 18 months and 4 years, when a child is old enough to want to join in but too small to reach unaided.

Think of an ordinary day: your child needs to wash their hands before a meal, help with pouring, see what is on the hob, stir the pancake batter. Every time you lift them up and set them down. A wooden kitchen helper removes those lifts — and gives your child the ability to climb up themselves. That is not a luxury. That is the daily logistics of family life solved in the right way.

Two models — find the toddler tower that fits your kitchen

The choice is not about price or quality — both models are made from solid wood with the same care. It is about your home and your child's age.

Stripe – fixed toddler tower for the youngest (from 12 months)

Stripe is our fixed model with three permanently mounted platforms. That gives the construction a naturally low centre of gravity that cannot shift. The result is a wooden toddler tower from 1 year that does not move regardless of how the child moves, reaches, or leans.

Permanent 360° safety rail. Wide steps that function as a staircase. Load capacity up to 50 kg. Available in five colourways with vertical stripe accent — Mediterranean, Beige & Orchid, Grey & Turquoise, and more.

Ideal for: families with children from 12 months, larger kitchens, parents who prioritise maximum stability.

Slim – foldable learning tower for small kitchens and flats (from 18 months)

Slim is our foldable learning tower — it folds to 12 cm wide in seconds and stores behind a door, in a narrow cupboard, or along a wall. The most compact foldable toddler tower on the market. For families with limited space, a foldable model is often the most practical choice.

With a load capacity of 95 kg, Slim can be used by adults as a kitchen step stool — and grows with your child via an adjustable platform height of 35 and 45 cm. The wooden kitchen helper that solves the space problem without compromising on safety.

Ideal for: small kitchens, flats, families who need to store the tower quickly. Available in Grey, White, Authentic natural wood, and Black Loft. From 18 months.

Why Montessori families choose a toddler tower

A toddler tower is different from a step stool or ordinary chair because the child stands protected within a safety rail — free to move, but safely contained. In the Montessori philosophy, independence is central: the child participates in real tasks in real life, not simulated activities. A Montessori learning tower makes that concrete — washing hands, cooking, baking — without an adult lifting them. The child participates on their own terms. That builds confidence in a way no toy can replicate.

Material — solid wood, water-based paint, no chemicals

Both models are made from solid wood and birch plywood. All surfaces treated with safe water-based paint — CE approved and free from harmful chemicals. Rounded edges on every corner.

The wood is dried to joinery standard before production — stable, dimensionally consistent, and with no risk of off-gassing. Wipes clean with a damp cloth. Built to be passed down to a younger sibling.

A considered gift — for a first birthday, a second birthday, or from grandparents who know what daily family life actually looks like.

A toddler tower is not a gift for the child — it is a gift for the family. For the parent who lifts their child to the sink ten times a day. For the back that feels it by the evening. For the morning that gets lighter when a child can climb up, wash their hands, and take part without being carried.

Grandparents who have lived through the toddler years know what genuinely helps. Parents searching for first birthday gift ideas that will still be in daily use at age four know it too. A wooden toddler tower is not a toy that gets forgotten after two weeks — it is a piece of furniture used every single day from the first unsteady steps to school age. One of the most worthwhile gifts for a 1-year-old, a 2-year-old birthday gift, or a Christmas present for a toddler that earns its place from day one and keeps it for years.

Frequently asked questions

When is the right age to start using a toddler tower?

From the moment a child can stand steadily with support — typically around 12 months. Stripe, our fixed model with a permanent 360° safety rail, is designed for children from 12 months. Slim, our foldable model, is recommended from 18 months. Both can be used until around age 6–7. The need is strongest between 18 months and 4 years, when a child is old enough to want to participate but too small to reach unaided.

What is the difference between a learning tower and a helper tower?

They are the same thing. The terms learning tower, toddler tower, helper tower, kitchen helper, and Montessori tower all refer to the same piece of furniture: a wooden platform with a safety rail that brings a child safely up to worktop height. Different brands use different names. The function is identical.

Foldable or fixed — which toddler tower should I choose?

It comes down to your child's age and your kitchen:

Fixed (Stripe): from 12 months, always present at the worktop, permanent 360° safety rail, no moving parts — the right choice for the youngest toddlers and families with space for a permanent piece of furniture.

Foldable (Slim): from 18 months, folds to 12 cm behind a door, 95 kg load capacity so adults can use it as a kitchen step too — the right choice for small kitchens, flats, and families who need flexibility.

Why are wooden learning towers more expensive than plastic alternatives?

Think of it the way you would a dining chair. There are cheap chairs that look the same as expensive ones — but the joints loosen within a year and you would never stand on them. There are decent wooden chairs from mass production — better, but not the same as a chair made in a proper joinery workshop where the construction is built for decades of use. No factory line achieves that by volume alone.

Learning towers work the same way. At the lower end you have MDF and plastic — the fixings wear before the product should, and the joints that take the most stress are often the first to go. At the other end are solid wood constructions where the high-wear points are reinforced with metal hardware, built for daily use over years.

Barin Toys has spent years making solid wood children's furniture accessible to a wider range of families — not as a compromise, but as a principle. Our toddler towers sit at the more affordable end of the solid wood category, without cutting corners on the construction — because we are not in the habit of making things badly. We respect the materials, the craft, and the families who will use what we make.

What does a child actually do in a toddler tower — day to day?

From 12 months: watching and imitating alongside you at the worktop. From around 2 years: washing hands independently before meals and after the toilet, helping with cooking and baking, pouring, stirring, rinsing vegetables. From 4 years: more independent at the worktop — actively helping with most tasks. These are not activities you plan. They are daily routines that repeat, and that build independence and good habits for life — without being lifted and set down ten times a day.

Is a toddler tower a good gift for a 1-year-old?

It is one of the most useful things you can give a family with a toddler. A wooden toddler tower is not a toy that gets forgotten after two weeks — it is a piece of furniture used every single day from the first unsteady steps to school age. For grandparents who want to give something that genuinely makes daily life easier, for parents choosing quality over novelty — a toddler tower is the gift that earns its place on day one and keeps it for years.
